The St Louis Section–YCC organized a “Chemistry Career Night” on September 26th. The event—tailored for younger chemists, including undergraduates, graduate students, academics, and those early in their industrial careers—was held in the Lab Sciences Building at Washington University. The event featured five speakers, a panel discussion with the audience, and time for refreshments and networking.
Before the official opening, light refreshments were available outside the meeting room. A sign-up sheet to join the YCC was available, along with ACS student affiliate membership applications, and an information table provided by Covidien.
The event began with an introduction to the local section and the ACS by section Chair Keith Stine, who then introduced YCC Chair Arindam Roy. Dr Roy spoke about the YCC and welcomed the audience of over 70 attendees.
The guest speakers of the evening were Dr Lucinda Buhse (FDA), Dr Lloyd Hill (Covidien), Dr Rajesh Devraj (Pfizer), Mr Keith Hampton (On Assignment), and Dr Ryan McCulla (Saint Louis University). During the presentation portion of the evening, each speaker shared career advice relative to their respective backgrounds. After the talks, the speakers formed a panel to field questions from the audience for about 20 minutes.
Following the formal program, everyone moved back to the spacious Rettner Gallery for networking opportunities, supported by food and refreshments. The speakers have provided the PowerPoint slides (pdf, 1.9 MB) from their presentations.
The event was supported by a YCC starter grant, with additional funds from Covidien, who also provided the information booth with free pens, notepads, literature, and gifts. Pfizer provided printing of the program booklets. Washington University provided the meeting space plus additional funding from the Program for Excellence in Nanotechnology through the group of Prof Karen Wooley.
