next contents  Lucinda Buhse, US Food & Drug Administration, wins 2011 St Louis Award

portrait of Dr Lucinda Buhse

Dr Lucinda (Cindy) Buhse

Dr Lucinda (Cindy) Buhse is the 2011 winner of the Saint Louis Award, given annually by the St Louis Section–ACS. Dr Buhse is Director of the Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis (DPA) in St Louis, a laboratory for the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) in the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Dr Buhse received a BA in Chemistry from Grinnell College, performing undergraduate research with Professor Luther Erikson. She followed with a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of California–Berkeley Professors John H Clark and George C Pimentel. Her thesis work involved the picosecond dynamics of solvation.

After graduate school, Dr Buhse began her career at Rohm and Haas in 1986, where received two patents for her work on polyimmides. In 1994, Dr Buhse moved to St Louis to work for Sigma Chemical, first as Validation Engineer in the Diagnostics Division. Shortly thereafter, she was promoted to Production Supervisor and then to Production Manager. From there, Dr Buhse moved to the Engineering Division as Validation Manager, followed by a position as Quality Control Manager in the Fine Chemicals Division.

Dr Buhse joined the FDA in 2001 as Deputy Director of the St Louis-based Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis, and was promoted to Division Director in 2004. The St Louis laboratory is involved in analytical methods development for rapid screening of pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, and pharmaceutical ingredients, and for characterization and comparison of drugs such as biologics, transdermals, and inhalation products. The laboratory also protects public health by providing analytical testing for the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. She has been involved in the identification of drugs illegally added to dietary supplements and the investigation of heparin during the recent adulteration crisis. During her time at the FDA, Dr Buhse authored or co-authored over 70 papers and has appeared multiple times as an invited speaker.

Dr Buhse’s husband, Dr Steve Kinsley, teaches Organic Chemistry Laboratory courses at Washington University. They have one daughter: Emma, 18, is attending University of Chicago this fall and is interested in studying Anthropology.

next previous contents  Midwest Regional Meeting 2011

MWRM2011 logo

The 2011 Midwest Regional ACS Meeting, hosted right here in St Louis by your very own local section, is fast approaching. By the time you read this, the deadline for submitting abstracts will have passed, so the technical program is pretty much set, with 13 special-topic symposia, and over 400 talks and posters on tap.

The early registration deadline is September 30th, so you still have a whole month to register and qualify for reduced-fee attendance. Fortunately, you won’t need to worry about the September 19 deadline for room reservations in the ACS block; you’re already home.

The meeting website is continually updated with the latest information on program, events, exhibitors, deadlines, etc. Please visit there for answers to your questions. And then register.

There are a couple of special events we especially want to bring to your attention.

14th Annual Women Chemists Luncheon

... in conjunction with the Regional Meeting Diversity Luncheon

The guest and speaker is Nancy Jackson, American Chemical Society President, speaking on Leadership and Diversity, October 20th, 12 noon–1:30 pm in the Matterhorn Room at the Sheraton Westport Chalet Hotel.

All are welcome, but reservations are requested by October 6th to Janet Wilking (wilkingj@umsl.edu, 314.516.6436) or Cristina De Meo (cdemeo@siue.edu, 618.650.3170).

Leadership Development Workshops at very special rates

The ACS Saint Louis and Wabash Local Sections are sponsoring two ACS Leadership Development Workshops at the ACS Midwest/Great Lakes Regional Meeting. The courses were developed for ACS leadership, but the skills learned are transferable to your workplace. Professional chemists and teachers are encouraged to attend. ACS grants to the St Louis and Wabash Valley Sections allow us to offer these workshops at significantly reduced fees—a huge 90% off the regular fee—in order to encourage wide participation. Each course is $15 for members, $30 for non-members, and $5 for unemployed members, students, teachers. You can register for one or both courses on the ACS Leadership Development web page. For more information, contact Alexa Serfis, barnoski@slu.edu or 314.977.3241.

  • Collaborating Across Boundaries, October 21st, 8 am–12 noon, with facilitator Jason Ritchie: Leaders in many roles (especially at more senior levels) need to be able to work effectively with leaders and members in other roles and units to accomplish their objectives. This course provides leaders with strategies and tools to make collaboration more productive including developing common goals, ensuring equity between what parties bring and what they gain from the effort, gaining members’ commitment, and establishing trust and resolving conflict.
  • Developing Communication Strategies, October 21st, 1–5 pm, with facilitator Frankie Wood-Black: As a senior leader, you will encounter an increasing number of opportunities to represent your organization to outside parties, stakeholders, and media, often under pressure and in high visible situations. This level of communication requires a higher understanding of communications to ensure the best representation possible. This interactive course introduces you to executive level communications where you will learn how to skillfully communicate new insights, keep others informed, report on new endeavors, and communicate in an interesting and compelling manner.

next previous contents Life is a picnic

For the 7th annual St Louis Section picnic on June 18th, our venue returned to Tower Grove Park, where the picnic got its start six years ago. The day threatened a little rain, but didn’t deliver, and the temperature stayed reasonably centered in the high double digits.

Section Chair Jeff Cornelius stepped up to act as planner and host, filling in for the Past Chair (whose job it really is) Shelley Minteer (who is ensconced in Utah now). Smartly, Jeff brought a strong intercontinental contingent of summer students with him to act as grillmeisters and additional minglers. Attendees comprised a mix of old reliables, who simply wouldn’t miss a picnic, and several new faces, new either to St Louis or to the ACS or both or spouses thereof.

A selection of the ...

... new faces at this year’s picnic

Our grillmeister, Kevoh (Calvin) Nyapete, one of the very helpful “volunteers” who came with Jeff Cornelius

This is almost all the people who were still there when someone shouted, “Group photo!” For some reason, all of Jeff’s summer students adsorbed to Eric Bruton: from the left, they are Kevoh (Calvin) Nyapete (Kenya), (Eric), Godfred Fianu (Ghana), Garrett Fielding (USA), and Brian Kamusinga (Kenya). Everyone else in the photo appreciated their help and good cheer. Behind the camera: photographer Vic Lewchenko.
