The 257th ACS National Meeting was hosted in Orlando, Florida, from March 31 to April 4, 2019. Councilor Donna Friedman was first off the blocks in providing the Councilor Talking Points document for member consumption.
A few of the highlights (but if you want it all, it’s here for you):
- There’s a big reorganization of the national ACS governing documents in the works. The Constitution and the Bylaws may — if members and the Board approve — be joined by a set of Standing Rules. Some of the bylaws will become standing rules, which will be easier to amend, providing more agility for addressing changing needs. Wonder if the same flexibility might be available to Local Sections, hmmm?
- Here’s a shocker: the dues escalator will not be applied at the end of 2019. Dues will remain at the same level for 2020.
- Society membership at the close of 2018 stood at 151,012, an increase of 0.1% over 2017, and the first increase in almost a decade. About 5,000 new members joined under market testing initiatives, without which the pattern of declining membership would likely have continued.
Our local section Councilors are always happy to hear from members with concerns or questions. Please don’t not bother them.
