One of the main items on the agenda for the January board meeting is to approve the budget. As the reader might imagine, budgeting for 2021 and this year has proven a challenge. Events written into the budget often didn’t happen or were postponed due to safety concerns.
Deliberations were even more difficult heading into 2020 because the Section approved a significant budget deficit once again. But COVID changed all that. The approved 2020 budget (after much deliberation and debate) contained a deficit of about $23k, but we ended the year with an $18k surplus. Then, trying to forecast what 2021 might look like, the Section approved an essentially balanced budget ($1k deficit). Still, many events were canceled. This combined with National ACS section dues being larger than expected meant we ended the year with a $32k surplus.
Which is a fairly long prelude to say: here is the approved 2022 budget. It once again is a planned deficit of $17.5k. And while I would never condone deficit spending ad infinitum, I do hope we manage to spend our budget, as it means it is safe for our members to get together and focus on chemistry!
