On Saturday, October 15th, almost 500 scouts and their leaders made slime as the grand finale activity of their participation in the Fright Fest experience at Beaumont Scout Reservation. The overall event was organized by the Greater St Loius Area Council, and Lisa Balbes organized the St Louis Section’s participation. Scouts worked in pairs, learned about non-newtonian fluids, polymer chemistry, safe storage of chemicals and PPE, and then made their own slime. Scouts took their own slime home. NCW materials were passed out to many of the parents and leaders. The event ran from 3pm to 9pm, with a new group of scouts approximtely every 15 minutes throughout the evening.
Probably half of the scouts (elementary school age) had made slime before, but approximately 20% never had. Many scouts described their Slime product as feeling “slimy”.
All materials and supplies were provided by Lisa Balbes.
Many thanks to our volunteers: Lisa Balbes, Mark Balbes, Teresa Colletti, Mat Rogers, Kristin Bales, and Ron Colletti
