On Saturday, September 22, 2018, the STL section of the Young Chemists Committee joined the STL area boy scouts for the 45th Annual Fall Fun Rally at the Beaumont Scout Reservation. The YCC sponsored a “Physical and Chemical Changes” booth, where volunteers led visitors through interactive demonstrations—the “disappearing cup”, “water-reactive metals” and a “chromatography mystery” lab. The Fall Fun Rally was a day-long event where 1000 scouts and their families participated in fun activities to build different skills. The STL YCC was privileged to take part!
On Thursday, September 27, 2018, the STL section of the YCC held a panel event, entitled “ACS & You,” and invited four distinguished members of the STL section ACS to provide advice and insight. Topics included the importance of networking, professional development, and building a career in STEM. The panel members included Natalie LaFranzo, Lisa Balbes, Suzy Hartmann and Brent Znosko. The event was attended by roughly 25–30 students, postdocs, and professionals who held an interactive discussion with our panel. Highlights include advice about the ACS Career Navigator, ACS Salary Calculator, mentorship and informational interviews, fielding interviewing questions, the ACS Leadership Development Forum, and tapping into your connected network.
