Science Café, or Café Scientifique, is a movement for the public understanding of science, founded in Leeds, UK, in 1998. It has spread quickly and widely, with cafés in over 30 countries, including about 50 throughout the USA.
Science Café is most definitely not just for professional scientists. It is intended to help educated laypeople become more knowledgable about scientific topics that may impact their lives, or may simply be interesting byways in science. We urge all section members to attend and proselytize. Bring your spouse, tell your friends.

St Louis Section–ACS received a grant for public outreach that it decided to apply toward establishing a Science Café here. The first meeting was held on October 22, 2008, at a convivial venue, Schlafly’s Bottleworks in Maplewood. A solid 38–40 attendees listened as Dr Hal Harris of UM–St Louis briefly introduced the topic: Science for Future Presidents. Following a brief recess for refills was a spirited hour or so of Q & A and discussion.
